Schumacher delights home fans

NUERBURGRING (Germany)

June 22.

Michael Schumacher delighted the home fans by lapping nearly a second faster than his Ferrari team mate Rubens Barrichello in today’s free practice for the European Grand Prix.

The four-times world champion, chasing his 60th career victory tomorrow and his seventh in nine Formula One races this season, lapped the reconfigured Nuerburgring circuit in one minute 30.658 seconds.

He spun, without serious consequences, on a bright morning in the Eifel Hills. The session was brought forward to ensure the later televised qualifying does not clash with World Cup soccer action.

Brazilian Barrichello was second fastest in 1:31.598, ahead of Michael’s younger brother Ralf in a Williams in 1:31.685.

Williams asserted themselves as Ferrari’s closest challengers with Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya fourth quickest as he prepared for a possible third successive pole.
